BCS And Turning Point Brooklyn Announce Mobile Shower Unit

In an exciting press conference Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced an alliance between his administration, BCS and Turning Point Brooklyn to establish New York’s first ever mobile shower service. The service, which is modeled on a successful program in San Francisco, will travel different routes around the borough to offer the simple dignity of a shower to Brooklyn’s homeless and under-housed residents.

BCS is so proud of our recent alliance with Turning Point Brooklyn, an organization that has served the Sunset Park and Red Hook neighborhoods for over 40 years. BCS and Turning Point share the same vision for Brooklyn and we are excited to announce this project together.

Also present at the announcement was humanitarian Johnny Merizalde who oversaw the “We Care About You” Shower Project – a stationary service – at Turning Point Brooklyn. Volunteering 7 AM to 2 PM every day for six years Johnny served countless men. Today he was thrilled to hear of a continuation of that important work.

Although the mobile unit will not be available for another year, there is already great need and anticipation in the borough. Last November, the Coalition for the Homeless estimated that there were more than 15,700 families in homeless shelters every night across the five boroughs. The most recent Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) street survey, conducted by the City last February, found nearly 4,000 homeless individuals on the streets that night. If you would like to help, BCS has many volunteer opportunities that support homeless New Yorkers. To volunteer, please contact us at volunteer@wearebcs.org, or sign up for the upcoming HOPE street survey on January 22nd.

We are thrilled to be uniting with Turning Point Brooklyn and Eric L. Adams for this important and groundbreaking initiative in Brooklyn.
